Tonkawa Chamber of Commerce

2009 Program of Work

 

TOURISM:

Chair:  Melinda Glasgow

  • Developing plans to extend the visit of conventioneers and tourists via a cooperative effort with surrounding communities.
  • Increasing Tonkawa’s visibility with expanded news releases and advertising.
  • Working in partnership with local attractions, including museums, Centennial Park, NOC, and  Pow-Wows to help enhance their image, upgrade physical property and increase visitation.

4th OF JULY/FIREWORKS CELEBRATION:

Chair:  Kevin Randall/Kurt Campbell

Planning a celebration at the park with lots of entertainment, fun, and food for the whole family. Following the fun filled day of activities at dusk a spectacular firework display.

 

LEGISLATIVE REVIEW:

Chair:  Becky Cunningham

To improve the business climate and quality of life in the Tonkawa area through involvement in the governmental/legislation process at the local, state, and federal levels.

 

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Co-Chairs:  Nancy Appleman, Carol Diemer

Organize the Teacher reception, City Employee reception, and any other special event that may come up within the year.

 

RETAIL DEVELOPMENT:

Chair:  Dianne Smith

  • Be supportive of training seminars sponsored by Northern Oklahoma College and other area educational institutions.
  • Sponsor MOOZE meetings and/or business after hours.
  • Actively consider recommendations of the membership to increase retail activity.

BEAUTIFICATION:

Chair:  Tonkawa Pride Committee

  • Seasonal beautification of the downtown area.
  • Overall, help clean up the Tonkawa Community and make an image of Tonkawa that it’s a place where people want to live.
  • Trash-Off Day

RECREATION:

Chair:  Jerry Hook

Strive to provide the best community youth programs possible with a strong emphasis on safety and attraction of business to our community, which has generated by the quality of recreation activities.

 

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT:

Chair:  Bob Steichen

  • Develop emerging and existing community leaders and encourage their involvement in the Chamber and the community.
  • Encourage a community-wide commitment to volunteerism.
  • Continue to actively seek future leadership for our community.

GOOD VIBRATIONS CAR SHOW:

Chair:  Joe Kingery

Tonkawa’s annual classic car show. Organize the prizes, concession stand, judging, and registration for the whole event. Also organize activities for the families and children to enjoy while in town attending the car show.

 

OLDE TYME CHRISTMAS:

Chair:  Contact the Chamber Office

Planning an historic downtown celebration for the whole community and supporting the businesses with drawings, helping families with the Giving Tree, and entertainment for the families to enjoy such as singing and watching the parade.

 

AGRICULTURE:

Chair:  Jared Grell

  • Work in cooperation with various organizations and government agencies to provide educational forums.
  • Promote the development of alternative practices and an awareness of agriculture.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

Chair:  Janet White

  • Encourage and support the restoration of Tonkawa’s downtown area and promote Tonkawa as a community in which to live begin and/or maintain businesses, and to visit.
  • Strive to attract business expansion locations.
  • Pursue avenues of providing and improving availability of housing in our community.
  • President serves as ex-officio to the Tonkawa Development Authority.

THREE SANDS REUNION:

Chair:  Erin Burns

A reunion (lunch) held on the first Saturday in June for second and third generations of Three Sands people to attend.

 

EDUCATION:

Chair:  Rod Reese

  • Integrate business support by pursuing better communication and supporting the educational community of Tonkawa.
  • Encourage Chamber involvement by educators.

HALLOWEEN FUN HOUSE:

Chair:  Jared Grell

In coordination with the Tonkawa quarterback club, organize the Haunted Sale Barn.
